Sailing In Wicklow

A very enjoyable trip was had by all who took part in the recent weekend trip to Arklow on the Ruffian.

The crew were Michael, Paal, Mark, Susan, Niamh, Martina and Damien

This is the furthest South that the SID Ruffian has ventured, previous trips south had only gone as far as Wicklow.

Sailing In Tipperary, Clare & Galway

After a summer season of excess we had twelve penitential souls who travelled for to Lough Derg last weekend.

Brenda, Carlos, Cearbhall, Collette, Colm, Chris, Damien, Keith, Martha, Niamh, Robin and Trisha braved the bare feet, sleep deprivation, tea and dry toast diet.

We hired three yachts from Shannon Sailing, a Hunter 365, a Feeling 850 and a Westerly(ketch with a mizen rig). We met up in Dromineer on Friday evening for a glass of leomanade and then managed to find out boats on the Marina later that night.

On Saturday after a leisurely morning sorting out the boats, we eventually got going with an invigorating sail to Terryglass in a very fresh breeze. We were cured of all ailments after a round of the holy wells so we then retired to the Derg Inn for supper. The winds had eased by Sunday morning, so we sailed up to Portumna to survey the Galway coast and then headed south, eventually making landfall at Garrykennedy. We had planned to visit the West Bank (Clare) but we decided to leave that till next years return trip. After lunch in GarryK with the Hells Angels, we then had our final sail back to base.

There a lots of picturesque harbours and villages on the lake, and lots of great pubs. Lough Derg is the biggest lake in the 26 counties, and is 25 miles long so there lots sailing to be done. It's well worth the trip.

Powerboat course:

Congratulations to Brenda, Chris and Eleanor who completed their level 2 powerboat last weekend. There may be another course at the end of November which will be run on 2 Saturdays rather than one weekend, also there will definitely be another weekend course early next year.

Every member of the club should aim to have a powerboat qualification.

Here some feedback on course from Brenda

"The course was excellent, very well organised and run. There were 15 students and 5 instructors so the ratio was 1:3. There was a good mix of theory and practice, with most of the time being spent on the water. There was plenty of opportunity to practice manoeuvres or ask questions. Although it was an intense learning weekend, the atmosphere was kept light hearted and fun.

A course booklet was provided for extra reading. Much of what was covered was not just restricted to powerboating, e.g. safety, weather, tides etc.
Overall, it was a very informative and enjoyable two days and made the lack of a weekend sleep-in very worthwhile. I would definitely recommend the course."

Please contact Damien if you are interested.

Winter Theory courses

If you are missing the summer sailing or simply want to learn more why not consider the Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper course. A number of SID people have completed this course over the past few years and the course is very informative and enjoyable.  All SID sailors would have enough to meet the pre-requisites of this course. Course providers can be found at http://www.sailing.ie/clubs/newsDetails.asp?id=265  If you are doing a course why not mail the group to see if anyone else from SID might join you?  Don't forget there are winter courses covering, VHF radio, power boating, First aid, marine mechanics etc......

Frostbites

The frostbite series will be starting from the end of October. If you are interested in taking part please let me know and include some indication of how often you would expect to sail. We will enter a number of boats depending on level of interest. Racing will be each Sunday at 1.00-2.00 pm so you are looking at being in Dun Loaghaire from around 12.00 to 3.00. You will be an honorary member of the DMYC for the day, so you can use their facilities i.e. hot showers! We will divide up the entry cost ~e120 per boat among those taking part.

Luigi Malones

Thanks to Joan who organised the recent end of summer outing to Luigi Malones in  Temple Bar.

A great night was had by all with a turnout of seventeen members and friends. Joan tells me the food was yummy especially the lamb kebabs on a skewer hanging from a holder on the table. If you couldn't make it there will be another evening out next month. Watch out for details.
